What is Sedation Dentistry?

Safe and effective solution to ensure an anxiety-free dental care experience!

Sedation dentistry involves the use of mild sedatives (calming drugs) to provide a relaxed state for dental treatment. This is an incredible solution for patients who are anxious or afraid of oral surgeries.

At Synergy Dental Arts, we provide various conscious sedation options for our patients. Mostly, the type of sedatives falls under the following categories.

  • Nitrous Oxide: Nitrous Oxide, also known as the laughing gas, is a colorless gas with a sweet odor that is administered along with oxygen. The gas produces a numbing effect and can also enhance your feeling of well-being. In dentistry, nitrous oxide is mainly used for anxious patients during mild and restricted procedures, including fillings and crowns. However, sometimes it may be used with other forms of sedation.
  • Oral Conscious Sedation: Although Nitrous Oxide is a potent sedative yet oral sedatives are preferred to produce a calmer state for nervous dental patients. The oral options in dentistry include Triazolam and Diazepam. These medications are mostly prescribed by dentists for anxiety, insomnia, and muscle spasms. Furthermore, oral sedation is also a good choice for anxious patients that require a lengthy medical procedure. The only drawback is that these medications take time to wear off. Thus, patients may feel sedated even after their procedure and should not plan to drive home.
  • IV Sedation: Usually, this type of conscious sedation is mostly preferred by Dr. Kandola and his team at Synergy Dental Arts. In this type, the medications are administered intravenously to the patient. The type of medication delivered may depend on the patient's condition and past medical history. IV sedation causes a twilight state of consciousness during which the patients are responsive to verbal command but may doze on and off out of sleep. According to the patients at Synergy, the procedure lasts only for a few minutes.

The conscious sedation methods by Dr. Kandola are widely accepted, safe, and recognized by anxious and fearful patients. Providing such options enables patients to receive dental treatments without any nervousness by maintaining optimal oral health. Moreover, longer procedures requiring multiple sittings can also be done by the use of conscious sedation.

Dr. Gagandeep Kandola and his team at Synergy Dental Arts are committed to providing the best individualized care. Our team is fully aware of the anxiety and nervousness felt by various people during treatments. We make sure that our patients receive the best dental care possible which can make them feel safe and comfortable.
